Evening Prayers

Here is a collection of traditional, pre-conciliar, Catholic prayers composed by love-struck Saints and Church authorities that have been recited for decades, if not centuries. Many are specifically orientated for the end of the day and others are included for their pious value and consoling nature.

This particular itinerary or schedule has no specific approbation, and is merely offered for your consideration. The full complement is quite lengthy – though certainly not exhaustive – and so one may like to skim through and recite at one’s pleasure. Links are included to additional or related prayers and suggested invocations are often-times included in italics; these do not form part of the actual prayers and are suggestions only.

One may like to explore further resources such as the Pieta Prayer Book or ‘App‘, the classic Blessed Be God Prayer Book; or indeed the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Divine Office (online here).

One of the many evils of the Protestant heresy is its assault on the necessity for rigorous prayer, a regime that will save the soul. ‘Mindless repetitive prayer’ they say? Ho! I say. One should utilise the rich tapestry and imagery of these beautiful prayers to contemplate the Divine Mysteries and ensure that – every single day – one immerses oneself in our Blessed Lord’s Passion, even if only for a few minutes.

“If you pray you are sure of saving your soul.  If you do not pray you are just as sure to lose your soul.”
(St. Alphonsus de Ligouri, Doctor of the Church: Prayer)

Opening Prayers

A Prayer for Protection

O My God, I adore Thee and I love Thee with all my heart. I thank Thee for having created me, for having made me a Catholic and for having watched over me this day. Pardon me for the evil I have done this day; and if I have done any good, deign to accept it. Watch over me while I take my rest and deliver me from danger. May Thy grace be always with me. Amen.

•••••••

Prayer of St. Alphonsus

Jesus Christ, my God, I adore Thee and I thank Thee for the many favors Thou hast bestowed on me this day. I offer Thee my sleep and all the moments of this night, and I pray Thee to preserve me from sin. Therefore, I place myself in Thy most sacred side, and under the mantle of our Blessed Lady, my Mother. May the holy Angels assist me and keep me in peace, and may Thy blessing be upon me. Amen.

•••••••

Prayer for the Home

Visit, we beseech Thee, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy. Let Thy holy Angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace; and may Thy blessing be always upon us, through our Lord Jesus* Christ ( …Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end). Amen.

Save us, O Lord, when we are awake, and keep us while we sleep, that we may watch with Christ, and rest in peace. Amen.

(Partial indulgence, 1968)

* Always bow one’s head at the name of Jesus and mention of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Prayer for Daily Neglects

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with all Its Love, all Its sufferings, and all Its merits:

First: to expiate all the sins I have committed this day, and during all my life.

Gloria Patri …

Second: to purify the good I have done poorly this day, and during all my life.

Gloria Patri …

Third: To supply for the good I ought to have done, and that I have neglected this day and during all my life.

Gloria Patri …

… and / or …

Examination of Conscience

O my Lord Jesus Christ, Judge of the living and the dead, before Whom I must appear one day to give an exact account of my whole life; enlighten me, I beseech Thee, and give me a humble and contrite heart, that I may see wherein I have offended Thine infinite Majesty, and judge myself now with such a just severity, that then Thou mayest judge me with mercy and clemency.

Here pause a moment to consider where and in whose company you have been this day. Call to mind the sins committed against God, your neighbour, or yourself; and reflect whether you have fulfilled the duties of your state of life.

Offences against God: Omission or negligence in religions duties; irreverence and wilful distractions in prayer; lack of confidence and resignation; cursing, swearing, etc.
Against neighbour: Want of obedience or respect; scandal, hatred, quarrelling; stealing, injuries; lies, false reports; jealousy, desire of revenge, etc.
Against self: Vanity, human respect; thoughts, desires or language against purity; intemperance in eating or drinking; laziness and neglect of one’s duties.

Make an Act of Contrition.

Spiritual Communion (alternative)

O, Jesus, I turn toward the Holy Tabernacle where Thou doth live hidden for love of me. I love Thee, O, my God. I cannot receive Thee in Holy Communion.  Come, nevertheless, and visit me with Thy Grace. Come spiritually into my heart. Purify it. Sanctify it. Render it like unto Thine Own. Amen.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof:
(Dómine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum:)

but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.
(sed tantum dic verbo et sanábitur ánima mea.)

Most Holy Trinity, I adore Thee! My God, my God, I love Thee in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Amen.

Prayers to Our Lord

Prayer of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Adorable Heart of Jesus, glowing with Love for us and inflamed with zeal for our salvation. O Heart that understands the misery to which our sins have brought us, infinitely rich in Mercy to heal the wounds of our souls, behold me humbly kneeling before Thee to express the sorrow that fills my heart for the coldness and indifference with which I have so long returned the numberless benefits which Thou hast bestowed upon me.

With a deep sense of the outrages that have been heaped upon Thee by my sins and the sins of others, I wish to make reparation to Thy most Sacred Majesty. It was our sins that filled Thy Heart with bitterness; it was the weight of our guilt that pressed down Thy Face to the earth in the Garden of Olives and caused Thee to die in agony on the Cross. But now, repentant and sorrowful, I implore Thy forgiveness.

Adorable Heart of Jesus, Source of true consolation and ever merciful to the penitent sinner, impart to our hearts the spirit of penance that we may be sincerely sorry for our sins. Pardon them, O Lord, in Thy Mercy, and let all who have sinned against Thee in the Sacrament of Thy love be converted and return unto Thee. Deliver us from our sins. And in order to repair the sins of ingratitude by which we have grieved Thy most tender and loving Heart, may we love and honour Thee in the most adorable Sacrament of the Altar, where Thou art present to hear and grant our petitions and to be the food and life of our souls.

Merciful Jesus, be our Mediator with Thy Heavenly Father, Whom we have so grievously offended. Help us to amend our ways. As Thy Sacred Heart is our refuge and our hope when we have sinned, so let it be the strength and support of our repentance, and nothing in life or death shall ever separate us from Thee. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thy Kingdom come!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, may the whole world burn with love for Thee!
May the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus be loved everywhere!
Merciful Jesus, I consecrate myself today and always to Thy Most Sacred Heart.
O Sweetest Heart of Jesus, I implore that I may ever love Thee more and more.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in Thy Love for me.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, convert sinners, save the dying, deliver the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Christ the King
My Jesus, Mercy!

The Prayer of Christ the King

O Christ, Jesus, I acknowledge Thee as Universal King. For Thee all creatures have been made. Do Thou exercise over me all the rights that Thou hast.

Renew my Baptismal Vows, I renounce Satan, with all his works and pomps, and I promise to live as a good Catholic: Especially, do I pledge myself, by all the means in my power, to bring about the triumph of the rights of God and of Thy Church.

Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer Thee all my poor actions to obtain that all hearts may recognise Thy Sacred Royalty, and that thus the reign of Thy Peace may be established throughout the entire world. Amen.

Let us pray.
Almighty, everlasting God, who didst will that all things should be made new in Thy beloved Son, the universal King, mercifully grant that all kindred of the Gentiles scattered by the ravages of sin may be brought under the sweet yoke of His rule. Who liveth and reigneth with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Christ, I believe in Thee, the ultimate good. Thou only art the King of Kings, I adore and worship only Thee.

Prayers to Our Lady

Immaculate Heart of Mary
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

Mother of Fair Love Prayer

I am the mother of fair love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope. In me is all grace of the way and of the truth, in me is all hope of life and of virtue. Come over to me, all ye that desire me, and be filled with my fruits. (Sirach 24: 24-26)

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Grace, Hope of the world. Hear us, thy children, who cry to thee.

Let us pray.
O God, who by the marvellous protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary hast strengthened us in hope, grant we beseech Thee, that by persevering in prayer at her admonition, we may obtain the favours we devoutly implore. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O holy and immaculate virginity, I know not by what praises I may extol thee: for thou hast borne in thy womb, Whom the heavens could not contain.

Canticle of Mary
(Magnificat)

My soul doth magnify: the LORD.
And my spirit hath rejoiced: in GOD my Saviour.
For He hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He that is mighty hath done great things unto me: and holy is His Name.
And His mercy is from generation to generation: unto them that fear Him.
He hath shewed strength with His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble.
He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent empty away.
He hath upholden His servant Israel: being mindful of His mercy.
As He spake unto our fathers: to Abraham and his seed for ever.
(St. Luke 1:46-55; Raccolta, 1910)

Gloria Patri …

Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array?
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Hail Thou Star of Ocean
(Ave Maris Stella)

Hail thou Star of Ocean,
Portal of the Sky.
Ever Virgin Mother,
Of the Lord Most High.

O! By Gabriel’s ‘Ave’
Uttered long ago.
Eva’s name reversing,
Established peace below.

Break the captives’ fetters,
Light on blindness pour.
All our ills expelling,
Every bliss implore.

Show thyself a Mother,
Offer Him our sighs,
Who for us incarnate,
did not thee despise.

Virgin of all virgins,
to thy shelter take us.
Gentlest of the gentle,
chaste and gentle make us.

Still as on we journey,
Help our weak endeavour,
Till with thee and Jesus,
We rejoice forever.

Through the Highest Heaven,
To the Almighty Three:
Father, Son and Spirit,
One same glory be.
Amen.

Grace was poured forth on thy lips, therefore hath the Lord blessed thee forever.

Prayer to Our Lady taught to St. Gertrude

O most chaste Virgin Mary, I beseech thee by that unspotted purity wherewith thou didst prepare for the Son of God a dwelling of delight in thy virginal womb, that by thine intercession I may be cleansed of every stain of sin.

O most humble Virgin Mary, I beseech thee by that most profound humility whereby thou didst merit to be raised high above all the choirs of the angels and the saints, that by thine intercession all my negligence may be expiated.

O most loving Virgin Mary I beseech thee, by that ineffable love which united thee so closely and so inseparably to God, that by thine intercession I may obtain an abundance of all merits. Amen.

Mother of Divine Grace, pray for us!

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin to Obtain the Love of Jesus and a Happy Death

O Mary! Thou who so much desirest to see Jesus loved, if thou lovest me, this is the favour that I now ask of thee, to obtain for me a great love for Jesus Christ. Thou obtainest from thy Son whatever thou pleasest; pray, then, for me, and console me. Obtain for me a great love for thee, who of all creatures, art the most loving and beloved of God. And through that grief which thou didst suffer on Calvary, when thou didst behold Jesus expire on the Cross, obtainest for me a happy death, that by loving Jesus and thee, my Mother, I may come to love thee forever in heaven. Amen.

Prayers of Reparation to Our Lady

Mary, Mother of Sorrowful Heart
Virgin Most Sorrowful, pray for us.

Short Prayer of Reparation to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Mary, bless this house, where thy name is ever held in benediction. All glory to Mary ever Immaculate, ever Virgin, blessed among women, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, Queen of Paradise. Amen.

Reparation for insults to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Blessed Virgin, Mother of God, look down in mercy from Heaven, where thou art enthroned as Queen, upon me, a miserable sinner, thine unworthy servant. Although I know full well my own unworthiness, yet in order to atone for the offences that are done to thee by impious and blasphemous tongues, from the depths of my heart I praise and extol thee as the purest, the fairest, the holiest creature of all God’s handiwork.

I bless thy Holy name, I praise thine exalted privilege of being truly Mother of God, ever Virgin, conceived without stain of sin, Co-Redemptrix of the human race. I bless the Eternal Father who chose thee in an especial way for His daughter; I bless the Word Incarnate Who took upon Himself our nature in thy bosom and so made thee His Mother; I bless the Holy Ghost who took thee as His bride. All honour, praise and thanksgiving to the ever-blessed Trinity who predestined thee and loved thee so exceedingly from all eternity as to exalt thee above all creatures to the most sublime heights.

O Virgin, holy and merciful, obtain for all who offend thee the grace of repentance, and graciously accept this poor act of homage from me thy servant, obtaining likewise for me from thy Divine Son the pardon and remission of all my sins. Amen.
(Raccolta, 1950)

Reparation for blasphemy against the Blessed Virgin Mary

Most glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, turn thine eyes in pity upon us, miserable sinners; we are sore afflicted by the many evils that surround us in this life, but especially do we feel our hearts break within us upon hearing the dreadful insults and blasphemies uttered against thee, O Virgin Immaculate. O how these impious sayings offend the infinite Majesty of God and of His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ! How they provoke His indignation and give us cause to fear the terrible effects of His vengeance!

… We desire, O most Holy Mother, to love thee and to honour thee with all our hearts, since this is the Will of God. And just because we love thee, we will do all that is in our power to make thee honoured and loved by all men. In the meantime do thou, our merciful Mother, the supreme comforter of the afflicted, accept this our act of reparation which we offer thee for ourselves and for all our families, as well as for all who impiously blaspheme thee, not knowing what they say. Do thou obtain for them from Almighty God the grace of conversion, and thus render more manifest and more glorious thy kindness, thy power and thy great mercy.

May they join with us in proclaiming thee Blessed among women, the Immaculate Virgin and most compassionate Mother of God. Amen.

An Ancient Prayer to St. Joseph

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in thee all my interests and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by thy powerful intercession and obtain for me all spiritual blessings through thy foster Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord, so that, having engaged here below thy heavenly power, I may offer thee my thanksgiving and homage.

O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating thee with Jesus asleep in thine arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near thy heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath.

St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen.

Help us, St. Joseph, in our earthly strife, ever to lead a pure and blameless life.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I give Thee my heart and my soul.

Closing Prayers

Psalm-90_Qui-Habitat

Psalm 90

Qui habitat.
The just is secure under the protection of God.

[1] The praise of a canticle for David.

He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob. [2] He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector, and my refuge: my God, in him will I trust. [3] For he hath delivered me from the snare of the hunters: and from the sharp word. [4] He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his wings thou shalt trust. [5] His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night.

[6] Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil. [7] A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee. [8] But thou shalt consider with thy eyes: and shalt see the reward of the wicked. [9] Because thou, O Lord, art my hope: thou hast made the most High thy refuge. [10] There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling.

[11] For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways. [12] In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. [13] Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon. [14] Because he hoped in me I will deliver him: I will protect him because he hath known my name. [15] He shall cry to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation, I will deliver him, and I will glorify him.

[16] I will fill him with length of days; and I will shew him my salvation.

Gloria Patri …

Mother of God, Defend us from False Shepherds

Most tender Mother of God, bulwark against heresies, we come before thee to implore thy protection against the heresy of Modernism, which has permeated into the Church as a fifth column. Keep us standing fast in the true Catholic faith, may we never be lured by the maxims of the world, that seek to blend with the perennial Truth to contaminate it and lead us into error.

Do not allow these enemies, we see infiltrated into the heart of the Church, to lead us away from the Revelation made by God. Help us to be determined to lose our lives before abandoning our Catholic faith. We know and believe that the Revealed Doctrine is immutable and unchangeable. Most holy Virgin Mary, grant that we may always be eager for the glory of God, and give us a great zeal and love for the Church founded by thine divine Son, so that we may defend her as thine soldiers from her internal enemies, who with a complete lack of humility, attack the holiest of all the work of Christ, putting their designs for her ruin into operation not from without but from within; so that there is no part of Catholic truth from which they hold their hand, none that they do not strive to corrupt under the pretext of renovation.

Most holy Virgin Mary, save our nations, preserve our faith and defend us from false shepherds! Amen.
