Preparatory Prayers

DIRECT, we beseech Thee, O Lord, all our actions by Thy holy inspiration, and carry them on by Thy gracious assistance so that every prayer and work of ours may begin always from Thee and through Thee be happily ended. Amen.
(Divine Office)

Almighty Father, I place the Precious Blood of Jesus before my lips before I pray, that my prayers may be purified before they ascend to Thy divine Altar.

And the Word was made Flesh, and dwelt among us.
May Thy Blood, O Lord, be my salvation.
May Thy Body, O Lord, be my life.

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love Thee. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love Thee.

May the most just, most high, most adorable will of God be in all things done, and praised, and magnified for ever.

Speak, Lord, for Thy servant heareth.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!

ETERNAL Father, we offer Thee the Blood, Passion and the Death of Jesus Christ, the sorrows of Mary most holy, and of St. Joseph, in satisfaction for our sins, in aid of the holy souls in purgatory, for the needs of holy Mother Church, and for the conversion of sinners. Amen.

Professions of Faith

Act of Faith

O MY GOD, I firmly believe that Thou art one God in Three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I believe that Thy Divine Son became Man, and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, Who canst neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen.

Act of Hope

O MY GOD, relying on Thy almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace, and Life Everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Act of Charity

O MY GOD, I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbour as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen.

The Confiteor

I CONFESS to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, to Blessed Michael the Archangel, to Blessed John the Baptist, to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I beseech Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, Blessed Michael the Archangel, Blessed John the Baptist, the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

CONFITEOR DEO  omnipotenti, beatæ Mariæ semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Ioanni Baptistæ, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et tibi, pater: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo et opere: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, beatum Michaelem Archangelum, beatum Ioannem Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et te pater, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.

May the Almighty God have mercy on me, and forgive me my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.

May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant me pardon, absolution, and remission of all my sins. Amen.

Act of Contrition

O MY GOD, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion

O MY JESUS, I believe that Thou art present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love Thee above all things, and I desire to receive Thee into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace Thee as if Thou wert already there and unite myself wholly to Thee. Never permit me to be separated from Thee. Amen.

Dómine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum:
Sed tantum dic verbo et sanábitur ánima mea.

Most Holy Trinity, I adore Thee! My God, my God, I love Thee in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Niceno-Constantinopolitan (Nicene) Creed, A.D. 381
Credo | Symbolum Niceenum

WE BELIVE in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by Whom all things were made; Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost and of the Virgin Mary (kneel or bow), AND WAS MADE MAN; He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; from thence He shall come again, with glory, to judge (both) the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end.

And (we believe) in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spake by the Prophets. (And we believe) In one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; (and) we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of Surrender | Suscipe Domine

St. Ignatius Suscipe Domine Prayer

TAKE Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all I have and possess. Thou hast given all to me. To Thee, O Lord, I return it.

All is Thine, dispose of it wholly according to Thy will. Give me Thy love and Thy grace, for this is sufficient for me. Amen.

Prayer to Obtain the Graces of all World’s Masses

ETERNAL FATHER, we humbly offer Thee our poor presence and that of the whole of humanity, from the beginning to the end of the world at all the Masses that ever have or ever will be prayed. We offer Thee all the pains, sufferings, prayers, sacrifices, joys and relaxations of our lives, in union with those of our dear Lord Jesus here on earth.

May the Most Precious Blood of Christ, all His Blood and wounds and agony save us, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary. Amen.

Prayer to Redeem Lost Time

[18] And the Lord God said: It is not good for man to be alone: let us make him a help like unto himself … And the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman: and brought her to Adam. [23] And Adam said: This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man. [24] Wherefore a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be two in one flesh.
(Genesis 2:18; 22-24)

O MY GOD! Source of all mercy! I acknowledge Thy sovereign power. While recalling the wasted years that are past, I believe that Thou, Lord, can in an instant turn this loss to gain. Miserable as I am, yet I firmly believe that Thou can do all things. Please restore to me the time lost, giving me Thy grace, both now and in the future, that I may appear before Thee in “wedding garments.” Amen.

Prayers to Our Lady

Immaculate Heart of Mary
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

Canticle of Mary | Magnificat

MY soul doth magnify: ✠ the LORD.
And my spirit hath rejoiced: in GOD my Saviour.
For He hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He that is mighty hath done great things unto me: and holy is His Name.
And His mercy is from generation to generation: unto them that fear Him.
He hath shewed strength with His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble.
He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent empty away.
He hath upholden His servant Israel: being mindful of His mercy.
As He spake unto our fathers: to Abraham and his seed for ever.
(St. Luke 1:46-55; Raccolta, 1910)

Gloria Patri …

Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array?

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Hail Thou Star of Ocean | Ave Maris Stella

HAIL thou Star of Ocean,
Portal of the Sky.
Ever Virgin Mother,
Of the Lord Most High.

O! By Gabriel’s ‘Ave’
Uttered long ago.
Eva’s name reversing,
Established peace below.

Break the captives’ fetters,
Light on blindness pour.
All our ills expelling,
Every bliss implore.

Show thyself a Mother,
Offer Him our sighs,
Who for us incarnate,
did not thee despise.

Still as on we journey,
Help our weak endeavour,
Till with thee and Jesus,
We rejoice forever.

Through the Highest Heaven,
To the Almighty Three:
Father, Son and Spirit,
One same glory be.

Grace was poured forth on thy lips; therefore hath the Lord blessed thee forever.

3 Aves Perpetual Novena

Oh, Immaculate Mary, Virgin most Powerful, I beseech thee, through that immense power which thou hast received from the eternal Father, obtain for me purity of heart, strength to overcome all the enemies of my soul, and the special favour I implore in my present necessity:

~ Mention request ~

Mother most pure! Forsake me not, despise not my prayer, graciously hear me for God’s glory, thine honour, and the welfare of my soul. To obtain this favour I honour thy power by reciting:

Ave Maria …

Oh Virgin Mary, my Mother, through that ineffable wisdom bestowed upon thee by the Incarnate Word of God, I humbly beseech thee, obtain for me meekness and humility of heart, a perfect knowledge of the Divine Will and strength to accomplish it always.

Oh Mary, Seat of Wisdom, as a tender Mother lead me in the path of Christian virtue and perfection; enlighten and enable me to do what is most pleasing to thy beloved Son, and obtain my petition. To obtain this grace I honour thy wisdom by reciting:

Ave Maria …

Oh, Mother of Mercy, Mother of penitent sinners, I stand before thee sinful and sorrowful, beseeching thee through that immense love given thee by the Holy Ghost for us poor sinners; obtain for me true and perfect contrition for my sins, which I hate and detest with all my heart, because I love God.

Mother most merciful, help me in my present necessity. Turn, then, those eyes of mercy toward us. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary! To obtain this precious gift, I honour thy loving mercy by reciting:

Ave Maria …

“A devout servant of Mary shall never perish.”

[3] Who forgiveth all thy iniquities: who healeth all thy diseases. [4] Who redeemeth thy life from destruction: who crowneth thee with mercy and compassion. [8] The Lord is compassionate and merciful: longsuffering and plenteous in mercy. [9] He will not always be angry: nor will he threaten for ever. Reparation for insults to the Blessed Virgin Mary

O Blessed Virgin, Mother of God, look down in mercy from Heaven, where thou art enthroned as Queen, upon me, a miserable sinner, thine unworthy servant. Although I know full well my own unworthiness, yet in order to atone for the offences that are done to thee by impious and blasphemous tongues, from the depths of my heart I praise and extol thee as the purest, the fairest, the holiest creature of all God’s handiwork.

I bless thy Holy name, I praise thine exalted privilege of being truly Mother of God, ever Virgin, conceived without stain of sin, Co-Redemptrix of the human race. I bless the Eternal Father who chose thee in an especial way for His daughter; I bless the Word Incarnate Who took upon Himself our nature in thy bosom and so made thee His Mother; I bless the Holy Ghost who took thee as His bride. All honour, praise and thanksgiving to the ever-blessed Trinity who predestined thee and loved thee so exceedingly from all eternity as to exalt thee above all creatures to the most sublime heights.

Psalm 90

Qui habitat.
The just is secure under the protection of God.

[1] The praise of a canticle for David.

He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob. [2] He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector, and my refuge: my God, in him will I trust. [3] For he hath delivered me from the snare of the hunters: and from the sharp word. [4] He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his wings thou shalt trust. [5] His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night.

[6] Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil. [7] A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee. [8] But thou shalt consider with thy eyes: and shalt see the reward of the wicked. [9] Because thou, O Lord, art my hope: thou hast made the most High thy refuge. [10] There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling.

[11] For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways. [12] In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. [13] Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon. [14] Because he hoped in me I will deliver him: I will protect him because he hath known my name. [15] He shall cry to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation, I will deliver him, and I will glorify him.

[16] I will fill him with length of days; and I will shew him my salvation.

Gloria Patri …

Crux sacra sti mihi lux! Nanquam draco sit mihi dux!
(May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my guide!)

August Queen of Heaven Prayer

August Queen of the Heavens, Heavenly Sovereign of the Angels, thou who from the beginning received from God the power and the mission to crush the head of Satan, we humbly beseech thee, to send thy holy Legions so that, under thy command and through thy power, they may pursue the demons, combat them everywhere, suppress their boldness and drive them back into the abyss.

“Who is like unto God?”

O good and tender Mother, thou shalt always be our love and our hope!

O Divine Mother, send thy holy Angels to defend us and drive far away from us the cruel enemy.

All ye holy Angels and Archangels, defend us and guard us. Amen.

God bless us and the Virgin protect us!

(Given to Ven. Father Louis Cestac, 13 January 1864)

Prayers to Guardian Angel

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits thee here.
Ever this [day/night], be at my side,
to light, to guard, to rule, to guide.

From stain of sin, O keep me free; and at me death, my helper be.

– OR –

Guardian Angel, guard me from harm.
Protect me in sleep without cause for alarm.
Keep me safe through the darkness of night,
and wake me gently with God’s morning light.

Ave Regina caelorum

Hail, O Queen of Heaven.
Hail, O Lady of Angels
Hail! thou root, hail! thou gate
From whom unto the world a light has arisen:

Rejoice, O glorious Virgin,
Lovely beyond all others,
Farewell, most beautiful maiden,
And pray for us to Christ.

℣. Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O sacred Virgin.
℟. Give me strength against thine enemies.

Let us pray.
We beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to assist our infirmity: that like as we do now commemorate Blessed Mary ever-Virgin, Mother of God; so by the help of her intercession we may die to our former sins and rise again to newness of life. Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
